Celebrating the Bible: It’s good for you

By Blogger Linda Ross

As a third-year medical student, Dr. Harold Koenig, began to note amazing accounts of the healing power of faith.  Decades later his medical research into this area has led to the publishing of over 350 peer reviewed articles and nearly 40 books. Right now I’m reading his ‘The Healing Power of Faith’ and marveling at some stories of healing initiated by reading the Bible.  The book also cites a number of studies showing the healthy effect of regular religious practice that includes Bible study.

Transformation by focusing on the Word of God was first written about several thousand years ago. You can find one of these passages in the book of Proverbs: “My son, attend to my words…Let them not depart from your sight; keep them in the center of your heart. For they are life to those who find them, healing and health to all their flesh.”  I too have found this true – given anchor, mentor, and physician the Bible has been to me since I was given my first copy 48 years ago.

Next Monday begins the annual celebration of National Bible Week.  In fact one might say, celebrating the Bible leads to celebrating health.

  3. There must certainly be power in faith, as there is also in positive thinking! We do reap what we sow, even with our thoughts!
