Tibetan monks to visit South Windsor church

photo by babasteve on FlickrSOUTH WINDSOR — On Feb. 27 from noon to 5 p.m., Unity of Greater Hartford will host a Celebration of Joy with the Tibetan Monks of the Drepung Gomang Monastery in India.  The special afternoon will present a rare opportunity to experience the Tibetan culture and Sacred Arts side-by-side with the Tibetan monks in an affirmation of joy and peace.

The afternoon will begin with a traditional lunch cooked and served by the monks.  Following lunch, participants will be invited to contribute to the creation of a expressive healing mandala and art, learn how to make sculpture that is traditionally made of butter, and create a Tibetan Prayer Flag for the Unity of Greater Hartford spiritual community. Events will also include ‘laughter yoga,’ Dances of International Peace, and a chanting service led by the monks.

The Drepung Gomang 2011 Tour is sponsored by the Tashi Gomang Dharma Center of Drepung Gomang Institute, located in Louisville, Ky., committed to preserving Tibetan culture, traditions and religion.  The monks are raising funds for their Monastery located in South India in its commitment to educate, feed, and otherwise almost 2,000 Tibetan monks living in exile from their homeland.  However, the funds raised are secondary to their mission of sharing the wisdom, compassion and good will of their Tibetan Buddhist faith and culture.

Admission to the event will be a suggested donation of $15.  Unity of Greater Hartford is located at 919 Ellington Road (Route 30) in South Windsor.  Additional information is available by calling (860) 289-8963, or visiting http://www.unityhartford.org
