Martin Luther King: God is Able

Today we celebrate as a nation the ideals of Martin Luther King, Jr.  His wife, Coretta Scott King writing for the King Center, said, “The Holiday commemorates America’s pre-eminent advocate of nonviolence — who taught by his example that nonviolent action is the most powerful, revolutionary force for social change… (with) the values of nonviolence, including unconditional love, tolerance, forgiveness and reconciliation…The Holiday provides a unique opportunity to teach young people to fight evil, not people, to get in the habit of asking themselves, “What is the most loving way I can resolve this conflict?”

On my bookshelf is a much underlined and tabbed copy of his book “Strength to Love”. It has shown me what fueled the man.  With statements as, “The ringing testimony of the Christian faith is that God is able”, King gives the reason for his faith, quoting scripture his life had proved.  Glimpsing his work in light of his faith, I marveled at the wise, courageous guidance it gave him.
