A fresh start

ContributedDru Scott Decker’s book had been selected for the Book-of-the-Month-Club and there were strong advance sales. She had interviews on radio, television, and in newspapers.  Yet she found herself telling a friend she felt spiritually flat, unfulfilled, empty.  Dru’s friend gave her a Bible, asking her to begin by reading Psalms, Proverbs, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John first.  Her recommendation was to pray and read the Bible for a few minutes every day for one year, to read with the objective of understanding more of the character of God.  And Dru did, even when it meant remembering when her head was on her pillow at night that she hadn’t read her Bible that day.  She pulled herself out of bed, prayed, and read a sentence or two.

She then wrote another book, Finding More Time in Your Life, which is where I first heard her story and was curious.  This is where she shared her change of methodology in her work with others.  Part I is titled The Strong Foundation – Starting with God.   Although I don’t know what Dru’s faith is, for me as a Christian Scientist starting with God is something I also have learned.   After 20 years of basically rollerblading through adult life, much of what had mattered to me was falling apart in irreparable ways.  I have always loved the Bible.  To help me understand it more, I decided to read a complementary book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy.
