Responsible, Reasonable, Rational Republican Found Alive!

Believe it or not, there was a time when conservatives were, well, conservative – and “conservative” was synonymous with “cool-headed,” “reasonable,” and “sensible.”  They wanted facts, data, and options before rendering decisions.  Think of Everett Dirksen, Jack Kemp, Bob Dole, and Gerald Ford.  They easily worked with the Republican Party’s moderates (remember them?) and (gasp!) liberals: Thomas Dewey (New York’s innovative governor and defeated presidential candidate), Charles Percy of Illinois, Hugh Scott of Pennsylvania, and Mark Hatfield of Oregon.

Guess what: they still live – and they’re just as worried about bizarre GOP thinking as is anyone else.  Former U.S. Rep Sherwood Boehlert (now retired, and considered a moderate Republican) wrote this on November 22 in the FrumForum: The “National Journal reported last month that 19 of the 20 serious GOP Senate challengers declared that the science of climate change is either inconclusive or flat-out wrong.  Many newly elected Republican House members take that position.  It is a stance that defies the findings of our country’s National Academy of Sciences, national scientific academies from around the world and 97 percent of the world’s climate scientists.”
