HARTFORD — He sat there, quietly composed, hidden behind the podium as churchgoers rose to their feet, clapped and danced and shouted “Amen!”
When he stood, he quietly said a prayer into the microphone and a hush came over Faith Congregational Church of Hartford. His voice wasn’t as booming as I thought it would be, but it didn’t matter. Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Wright’s tranquil words were heard loud and clear.
Like so many Americans, when I think of Jeremiah Wright, pastor emeritus of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, I think of the controversial things he’s said. You know, “America’s chickens are coming home to roost” and “…not God Bless America. God damn America,” and the antisemitic remarks he made in 2008.
