WATERBURY – Waterbury’s Library Park was all about Jesus on Saturday as more than 3,000 people visited the area for the seventh annual City Fest Project.
Karen Maleski says her church, Christ Church of Wolcott, comes to City Fest every summer. This year Christ Church provided games for the kids, free haircuts and free snacks.
“Where else can you go in an open public and talk about God?,” she asked. “Every year we come to reach out to all these people.”
Christ Church wasn’t the only congregation there trying to minister to the Waterbury community. Twenty-two churches were there handing out materials, praying for visitors and giving free goods away.
Several para church ministries and social service agencies were there as well. ACTS 4 Ministries Inc. provided free clothing to hundreds of attendees and Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship invited passersby into their prayer tent.
Deacon Paulene Adams of Alpha and Omega Ministries in Waterbury was at the event to promote her church, inform people about Alpha & Omega Christian Academy and to serve as one of the 11 musical acts.
This year City Fest featured live rap, gospel, country and contemporary music.
“We’ve been coming here for years. We just want to minister to the community and spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ,” she said.
Adams added that City Fest is a way for churches to network and fellowship together.
“It creates an opportunity for outreach for a lot of churches that probably don’t have an outreach program,” said City Fest Coordinator Peter O’Neill. “It gives us an atmosphere of unity because so many different churches are involved. It creates a great spirit of cooperation among local churches.”
There were also mimes, face painters, puppet shows and a live pottery demonstration by Michael Ferris, who illustrates the Bible through clay.
Despite soaring temperatures, high humidity and a few downpours, it’s estimated that City Fest beat last year’s record of 3,000 attendees.
Next year’s event is already in the planning stages. For information visit www.cityfest.us.
