Oldest Chabad Rabbi, Grandfather Of Local Rabbi dies

MONTREAL — Rabbi Moses E. Gerlitsky passed away April 4 in Montreal, Canada at the age of 94. He was the husband of the late Chana Etka Gerlitsky. He was one of the founders of the Rabbinical College of Canada & Chabad in Canada.

Rabbi Gerlitsky was born in Otwock, Poland, in 1931. He lost his entire family during the Holocaust.  He was saved through Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara. He was the sent as an emissary by the previous Lubavitcher Rebbe to Montreal.

He is survived by eight children and over 300 grandchildren and great grandchildren, many who are rabbis and Jewish leaders around the world. Locally he leaves a grandson Rabbi Joseph I. Eisenbach of Litchfield and a granddaughter Rebetsin Maryashe Deren of Greenwich.

Arrangements: Funeral was held on April 4  at Chesed Shel Emes in Montreal, Shiva will take place at the his home in Montreal.
