The Area Congregations Together (ACT) annual frozen turkey drive is underway for people in the lower Naugatuck Valley. There are two turkey drives happening next week. Dr. Bruce Sofferman and his wife Deborah of Smile Dental Centers will be collecting frozen turkeys and the fixings on Nov. 18 from 7 –10 a.m. in front of the former Crabtree Auto Dealership, 405 Bridgeport Avenue in Shelton between Exits 12 and 13 off Route 8 and again on Nov. 19 also from 7-10 a.m. at the Smile Dental Center, 318 Oxford Road (Route 67) in Oxford. The second drive will be on Nov. 21 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The eighth grade Gold Team from Seymour Middle School will be at 211 Mountain Road, Seymour, again this year collecting only frozen turkeys.
During the holiday season last year, ACT provided 600 meals, which were distributed through the Valley Food Bank Network. This holiday season the goal is to collect more than 1,000 frozen turkeys and the fixings to handle the increased requests for holiday meals.
“The homeless and low income residents in our area are really counting on the community to help provide them with all the ingredients necessary for a satisfying holiday meal,” explained Susan J. Agamy, executive director for ACT. “The local requests have grown so much this year, that we will need hundreds more non-perishable fixings, frozen turkeys or cash donations to fill the void.”
